What is a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), formerly DUNS Number?

What is a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), formerly DUNS Number?

The Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) is a 12-character alphanumeric code used by the U.S. federal government to uniquely identify entities doing business with the government. It replaces the previously used DUNS number system and is now the official standard for identifying organizations applying for federal grants, awards, or contracts.

The UEI is issued and managed by the System for Award Management (Home | SAM.gov ), not Dun & Bradstreet.

Why is a UEI Important?

A UEI is required for:

  • Registering with Home | SAM.gov to be eligible for federal grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements.

  • Doing business with U.S. federal agencies, including receiving payments.

  • Maintaining compliance with government reporting and procurement processes.

  • Ensuring a consistent identifier across federal databases for your organization.

Do I Need a UEI for PaymentWorks?

  • Not Required by PaymentWorks: A UEI is not mandatory for general PaymentWorks registration.

  • It is required for businesses dealing with federal contracts and if your customer is a government agency or a federally funded institution.

Make sure the number corresponds exactly with your organization’s legal name and physical address as registered with Home | SAM.gov to prevent any mismatches or delays.
