A W-9 form is an essential document required when registering as a provider of goods or services to an organization. It is not unique to PaymentWorks but is widely used in U.S.-based business transactions for tax reporting purposes.
What is a W-9 Form?
The Form W-9, officially titled Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification, is one of the most commonly used IRS forms. Vendors use it to provide their taxpayer identification details to customers.
- Purpose: To supply your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), such as a Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN), along with your name and address.
- Customer Use: Your customers will use the information on your W-9 to complete IRS forms such as 1099-MISC, which you will need for tax filing.
Who Needs a W-9?
- U.S. Residents and Businesses: A W-9 is required for vendors providing goods or services to U.S.-based organizations.
- Non-U.S. Residents: If you are a non-U.S. resident or business conducting business with a U.S.-based organization, you may need to supply a W-8 form instead of a W-9. Learn more: Questions About Tax Documents (W-9, W-8).
